What is toothpaste made of?

ToothpasteHave you ever stopped to think about toothpaste? We use it twice a day to make sure our teeth are healthy and clean. But what exactly is tooth paste? Have you ever wondered what that paste is made of that you brush your teeth with? Well we have.

There are 5 main parts to a good tooth paste. Abrasives, Detergents, Fluoride, Humectant Systems and Flavoring. Flavoring is simple, it provides a taste that won't turn you off from brushing. But what about the others?

Abrasives-Abrasives (commonly called cleaning and polishing agents) in toothpastes have been produced that are much milder since then, the idea being to clean yet preserve tooth enamel. These are basically used and infused to scrub away pesky plaque and materials from your teeth. It is what scrapes off all the junk food you have been eating. Without them, we would just be going through the motions.

Detergents-Your toothpaste has a foamy look because of detergents. But these are not like the detergent you use on your clothing. These are very mild so as to not induce oral irritation. Detergents are able to break through the tension of liquids. Surface tension is the property that makes a fluid appear as if it has a skin — noticeable when dust or even denser materials settle or float on it. The way soap breaks down grease is an example of surfactant action.

If you have any questions about brushing don't hesitate to give us a call at Little Rockies Pediatric Dentistry. Our number is (720) 638-6114. Next month we will suggest more games you can play with your child to enhance brushing.
