Dental Health Tips and Tricks for a Healthier After Halloween

Halloween themeHalloween is over, which is kicking off the holiday season of sugary candy and treats. The next few months will include an increase in holiday-themed snacks and plenty of hot chocolate. We know that this is a great way to celebrate the holidays, but it can have a negative impact on both your child’s overall and dental health.

We’re not at all suggesting that your children don’t participate in the festivities, just that you follow a few tips and tricks on how to make Halloween a little less scary for their teeth!

Dental Health Tips and Tricks for a Healthier Teeth

Below are a few ways that your family can have a fun and healthy Halloween:

  • Serve a healthy dinner before candy eating – Before allowing your little goblins and ghouls after Halloween treats, make sure to feed them a healthy, well-balanced dinner. This will prevent your children from feeling like they need to overindulge in candy.
  • Healthier treats – Avoid sour candies, which are highly acidic, chewy or sticky candy, which can pull off caps and fillings and prolong sugar exposure to the enamel, or hard candies, which can pose choking hazards or broken teeth.
  • Limit candy availability – When it comes to Halloween candy, moderation is key. Don’t allow your children to binge on candy, not only for the sake of their teeth but for the sake of their bodies as well. Choose “healthier” candy, like chocolate (which melts quickly off the teeth) and consider removing the most damaging candies.
  • Practice good oral hygiene habits – Lastly, the best way to reduce harm to teeth all year round is to practice good oral hygiene. Your whole family should be brushing their teeth twice a day, flossing daily, and visiting the dentist every six months for a dental cleaning and an exam.
