Dental Health and Epilepsy

Young teenager smiling as she walksSeizures are a hallmark of epilepsy and are also the reason why so many epileptic sufferers will need to make visits to the dentist. Both the disorder of epilepsy and the treatment can make trips to the dentist necessary and more difficult. Even with the extra difficulty, those who suffer from epilepsy should still make regular trips to the dentist.

Epilepsy and Dental Health

Convulsions and seizures are common with epilepsy. They can cause a number of dental health problems, including the following:

  • Jaw fracture
  • Cracked or chipped teeth
  • Biting the lips, tongue, or insides of the cheeks
  • Causing a tooth to be knocked out
  • TMJ disc dislocation during trauma

Unfortunately, the medications used to keep epileptic seizures under control can also cause problems for dental health. The best way to prevent these problems from occurring is to practice good oral healthcare. This includes brushing your teeth at least twice a day, floss daily, and visit the dentist every six months for a dental cleaning and an exam.
