Common Threats to a Teenager’s Dental Health

Young teenage female smilingAt Little Rockies Pediatric Dentistry, we know that it can take lots of work to achieve and then maintain a healthy and beautiful adult smile. The best thing parents and teenagers can do is learn about the most common threats to teenage teeth and how to avoid these issues so that your teen can maintain a smile he or she is proud of!

Threats to a Teen’s Teeth

Below are just a few of the most common threats to your teenager’s oral health:

  • Sports Injuries – The CDC has reported that around 3 million teeth are knocked out every year from youth sporting events alone! We recommend that your teen wears a mouth guard during contact sports or any other activities where a blow to the mouth may occur.
  • Dental Cavities – Dental cavities are the most common disease affecting young adults and children in the U.S. Additionally, dental cavities can be totally preventable. Decrease your teen’s odds of developing cavities by teaching him or her to brush at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, and eat more fruits or veggies. Your teen should also be visiting Little Rockies Pediatric Dentistry every six months for an exam.
  • Smoking or Vaping – Lastly, we know how popular vaping has become in recent years. These vape pens can still contain tobacco, which has been proven to cause damage to both the body and the teeth. Please make sure you talk with your teens about the dangers of tobacco use. We also encourage parents to abstain from tobacco use to set an example of healthy living for their children!
