Common Reasons for Your Child’s Toothache

Young child crying due to tooth painMost people will experience a toothache at some point, and they are no fun! Toothaches can come on suddenly and be notoriously difficult to relieve. Here at Little Rockies Pediatric Dentistry, we want to help parents understand the reasons for a child’s toothache and what steps should be taken to help your child relieve his or her tooth pain.

Common Causes of a Toothache

While there are many reasons for a toothache, below are a few of the most common we see in our office:

  • Lodged food debris – If a piece of food becomes lodged deep enough between the teeth, it can cause pain that feels similar to a toothache. The first thing to do is have your child rinse with warm water to loosen any debris and then floss his or her teeth gently to dislodge any food particles.
  • Dental Cavity – In the early stages of a cavity, your child may not feel pain. But if the dental cavity is allowed to deepen and reach the nerves of the tooth, a toothache can come on quite suddenly. Keeping regular dental checkups is a good way to catch and treat dental cavities before they can cause pain.
  • Cracked Tooth – A crack in the tooth may not always be visible and symptoms of a cracked tooth may not appear until a few days after the damage was done. If you suspect that your child has a cracked tooth, please visit our office as quickly as possible before the crack has a chance to become worse.

Almost all of the reasons for tooth pain are related to a problem with your child’s dental health. This means that, if your child is complaining of a persistent toothache, it’s important to schedule an appointment for your child here at Little Rockies Pediatric Dentistry. Our child’s dental office is located in Parker, Colorado.
