Common Childhood Dental Problems

Young kid smilingIt can be tough to see your children having dental health problems, especially if they’re in pain. The good news is that most dental problems are very easily prevented, meaning that you can save your wallet from expensive procedures and your child from painful or stressful treatments.

Practicing good oral hygiene is the best way to keep your child’s teeth healthy and strong. This means helping your children brush at least twice a day, floss every day and visit Little Rockies Pediatric Dentistry every 6 months for a dental cleaning and a checkup.

Common Childhood Dental Problems

Education about the common dental problems facing your family goes a long way towards your ability to prevent them from occurring in the first place:

  • Tooth decay and cavities – Dental cavities are the most common childhood illness and they’re very easily prevented. Decay and cavities are the results of a buildup of plaque and tartar on the teeth. Good oral hygiene can prevent decay and cavities!
  • Chronic bad breath – Bad breath, also called halitosis, can be embarrassing for your child. Around 85% of those with chronic halitosis have an underlying dental problem causing the bad breath. These can include dry mouth, gum disease, and dental cavities.
  • Tooth sensitivity – Sensitivity occurs when the tooth enamel starts to weaken and expose the tooth roots. Sensitive teeth can be treated with special toothpaste and toothbrushes made for those with sensitive teeth.
  • Sores in the mouth – Lastly, common sores in the mouth include cankers and cold sores. Canker sores (inside the mouth) are not contagious, but cold sores (on the lips or around the mouth) are; so be vigilant! As long as these sores last less than two weeks, they’re typically harmless. But if you’re concerned about a sore on your child’s mouth, please contact our office to make an appointment.

Here at Little Rockies Pediatric Dentistry, it’s important to us that our patients and their parents are well-educated about common dental problems and how to avoid them. If you have concerns about your child’s dental health or if it’s time to schedule a checkup, please contact Little Rockies Pediatric Dentistry here in Parker, Colorado.
